About the Sister-2-Sister Mentoring Program for Black Breast Cancer Survivors

SHARE’s Sister-2-Sister mentoring program aims to pair members with a Black or Biracial breast cancer survivor who is at least two years into their survivorship. They will provide one-on-one support for those who want to talk with someone who looks like them and truly understands the experience. These meet-ups will take place via Zoom.

The benefits of having a Sister-Mentor include receiving guidance, support, information, objective
feedback, and access to resources within the SHARE breast cancer community. A Sister-Mentor can offer new perspectives, achievable goals, and ways to manage anxiety and fear of recurrence, having experienced similar feelings. They can help mentees set clear expectations and build confidence to tackle difficult conversations, which might be considered taboo in the Black community, such as loss of sex drive, body insecurity, asking for accommodations at work, and finding ways to prioritize self-care and compassion, because it is important to find joy in survivorship.

This project is supported with funding from the State of New York.

Meet Our Sister-Mentors!

Monique

As a breast cancer survivor, I recognize the significance of emotional support, guidance, and coping strategies in fostering personal growth for individuals affect by the disease. By offering a listening ear and clarifying expectations form diagnosis to treatment and survivorship, I utilize my experience as a mentor to empower patients and facilitate a deeper understanding of their diagnosis, self-awareness, and treatment options. This mentorship enables individuals to regain control over their health and well-being, while also providing the necessary support and endurance to overcome challenges throughout and live beyond their breast cancer journey."

"When you are faced with a cancer diagnosis you are looking for your tribe and community that understands exactly what you are going through. It’s important for me to share my story and experiences to help my fellow sisters that come behind me and give them a glimmer of hope they are looking for. There is life after a cancer diagnosis and my goal is to give back and mentor those who are going through this journey."

"As a breast cancer survivor and woman of color, I deeply understand the challenges we face regarding healthcare disparities and the critical role self-advocacy plays. As a Sister 2 Sister Mentor, I am dedicated to engaging in meaningful conversations with my sisters, providing encouragement and support, sharing valuable knowledge, and connecting them with the essential resources they need to navigate their journey."

"Mentoring other Black breast cancer survivors is incredibly rewarding because I see firsthand how much it empowers and uplifts them through their journey. I wish I had had someone who truly understood my unique challenges when I was going through it. Offering that support now allows me to help others feel seen, heard, and equipped in ways that I longed for. It's about sharing strength and showing that none of us have to go through this alone."

"My cancer journey taught me many things, the most important was that every experience good or bad comes with lessons and opportunities.  What kept me going was knowing that I had cancer, but cancer NEVER had me! I used that motivation daily to get me through.  Now I have an opportunity to share with mentees how to find their own lessons and opportunities throughout their journeys."
